The Oyster Garden

The Oyster Garden is a fun, educational and engaging story, which helps young children appreciate the beauty of this fragile planet. This book reveals some of the causes of pollution and how it affects our waterways, beaches and oceans. The Oyster Garden puts children out in the field and shows them how to make a living, vertical, oyster garden. Many countries around the world have used recycled oyster shells not only to help filter polluted ocean water, but to help restore oyster reefs.

The Oyster Garden highlights the many creatures that use oyster beds as a habitat, and it demonstrates how recycled oysters strung on a rope, can eventually form an entire oyster ecosystem. Based on the concept that one oyster filters 50 gallons of polluted water a day, The Oyster Garden helps to demonstrate the working model of VOG’s (vertical oyster gardens), an environmental project to help restore Tampa Bay.
